2023 Week 13

27th March - 2nd April

A second batch of topsoil and spent mushroom compost was called in from Stavertons and quickly dispatched into the remaining raised beds mostly, it has to be said, by means of Alex’s hard graft.

All of these beds are now ready to go once the weather improves and the threat of frost is past. I have been thinking about what will go where but am undecided until the asparagus plants have arrived from Thompson and Morgan and I know what space needs to be allocated for them.

We spent the first half of the week battling with the mud and rain but it was great to get the area levelled out

Impromptu cold frames to house the smallest of the strawberry runners from last year, the self seeded coriander and some sprouting acorns from the compost heap

The Blackcurrant bushes have responded really well to pruning. Hopefully there will be enough to make some jam this year!

At the start of the week there is one day when I am able to get on the bricks to progress with the end wall of the garden. Its slow but rewarding work

And then at the end of the week Spring decided to turn up and after three days solid on the wall things start to take shape

Tomato plants are looking good

I swapped out some logs for some left over oak with my friends on the Lane following their recent building work. This beautifully rustic hand carved piece could be many centuries old. It’s going to get a new lease of life when it’s been built into the folly. That’s probably going to happen in about five years time!
